The first and perpetual step.
Think of the brain as an engine and dopamine as its fuel. We have two modes of dopaminergic activity: phasic and tonic. Phasic dopamine is the nitrous boost; tonic dopamine is the steady flow of gasoline.
phasic dopamine <-- we lower this
tonic dopamine <-- we raise this
Even a fully liberated or self-realised mind still operates on the substrate of dopaminergic regulation. Managing that substrate matters. You will always function and feel better when your dopaminergic environment is tonic-heavy.
Regulation tiers
high-stimulation <-- cycling, running, swimming, dance, snowshoeing, rowing
moderate-stimulation <-- walking, easy cycling, vocalisations, rocking, woodwork or crafts
low stimulation <-- sitting meditation, yin yoga, bathing
If you are religious, you can use your preferred religious practice as a form of dopaminergic regulation.
Dopaminergic warm-up and cool-down
Dopaminergic tone is lower in the mornings and evenings so these are the best times for quiet contemplative practice.
Phasic-heavy activities within an hour of waking or sleeping will either ruin your day or ruin your night. Try to keep your excitement to the daytime hours.
